Butter Bean Substitute

While you can easily find the substitutes on my list in your local grocery store, you can also experiment with different combinations of white beans, chickpeas, and lentils to create a flavorful alternative to butter beans. Here's a simple recipe using ingredients you may already have at home.

Equipment

  • 1 Small bowl
  • 1 Spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cannellini beans
  • 1 cup chickpeas (for a firmer texture)
  • ½ cup mashed white beans (for a creamy consistency)

Instructions

  • Rinse and drain 1 cup of cannellini beans or chickpeas.
  • If using as a whole bean replacement, substitute 1:1 in any recipe calling for butter beans.
  • For a creamier texture, mash ½ cup of white beans with a spoon before adding them to soups or stews.
  • If using chickpeas, consider simmering them for a few extra minutes to soften and mimic the texture of butter beans.
  • Stir the ingredients into your dish and adjust seasoning as needed.

Notes

  • Cannellini beans are the closest match in texture and flavor.
  • Great northern beans hold their shape better and work well in casseroles and stews.
  • Chickpeas offer a slightly firmer bite and mild flavor.
  • Mashed white beans create a smoother consistency in soups and dips.
