These air fryer jalapenos are quick, spicy, vegan friendly, and a really easy way to give fresh jalapeños a roasted flavor without turning on the oven. I like that you can control the heat by removing the seeds and membranes or leaving some behind, and the peppers only need a few simple seasonings before they go into the air fryer.

They take just 8–10 minutes to cook, and you can serve them as a snack or side or chop them up for tacos, burgers, salads, and dips. If you want something completely different to make next, try these Lemon Greek Yogurt Pancakes. Keep reading to see how to adjust the heat and get the jalapeños browned and tender without cooking them until they lose their shape.

Try These Air Fryer Jalapenos

I like roasted jalapeños when they still have a little structure rather than becoming completely soft. The air fryer browns the edges and wrinkles the skin while keeping the inside tender, and you can decide whether you want them milder or seriously spicy.

They’re also really versatile once cooked. I can serve them as they are or chop them into something else when I want a smoky little kick of heat without adding another sauce.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Quick to cook: They only need 8–10 minutes in the air fryer.
  • Control the heat: Remove the seeds and membranes for milder peppers or leave some in for more heat.
  • Very little oil: The olive oil is optional, and the jalapenos can be cooked completely oil-free.
  • Easy to serve: Eat them as a snack or side for ribs, steak, etc., or add them to tacos, bacon or meat burgers, salads, and dips as a great addition.

Ingredients

ingredients for roasted jalapenos in air fryer
  • Fresh jalapenos: I use 6–8 fresh jalapenos and slice them lengthwise. Removing the seeds and membranes makes them milder, while leaving some behind gives you more heat.
  • Olive oil: This is completely optional. I like the light coating it gives the peppers, but you can leave it out and air fry them without oil. Avocado or canola oil can also be used instead.
  • Salt: A little salt is all these peppers really need alongside the black pepper. I add it to taste rather than measuring a fixed amount.
  • Black pepper: I use this to add a little extra seasoning without taking away from the jalapeno flavor itself. Smoked paprika or garlic powder can also be added if you want more seasoning.

How to Make Air Fryer Jalapenos

1. Wash and pat the jalapeños dry. For comfort, wear gloves while handling to avoid burning yourself in sensitive areas.

2. Slice the peppers lengthwise; remove seeds and membranes for a milder result or leave some in for extra heat.

3. Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (190°C). Toss the jalapeños with olive oil (optional), salt, and black pepper. You can also cook them completely oil-free.

4. Arrange the jalapeño halves in a single, even layer in the air fryer basket: skin side up for a crispier texture, cut side up for a softer inside. Leave space for air circulation.

5. Air fry for 8–10 minutes at 370°F (190°C). Flip halfway through for even cooking. The edges should be browned, the skin slightly wrinkled, and the flesh tender but holding its shape. Add 1–2 more minutes if needed.

6. Transfer to a plate or serving dish. As an added option, drizzle with some lime juice, sprinkle with smoked paprika, or chop to place in tacos, burgers, salads, and dips. Serve and enjoy!

You may also like Lemon Greek Yogurt Pancakes — soft pancakes made extra tender with Greek yogurt and lemon zest.

Recipe Tips

  • Wear gloves when handling the jalapenos if you want to keep the pepper oils off your hands.
  • Remove the seeds and membranes when you want milder roasted jalapenos.
  • Keep the peppers in a single layer and leave room between them for air circulation.
  • Flip the jalapenos halfway through so they cook evenly.
  • If they darken too quickly, reduce the temperature to 356°F (180°C). If they haven’t changed color after 8 minutes, increase it to 392°F (200°C) or continue cooking in 1–2 minute increments.

These Air Fryer Jalapeños are quick, spicy, and deliciously roasted with lightly crisp edges. They’re an easy way to add a little heat to burgers, tacos, nachos, or your favorite meals.

Equipment

  • Air fryer (I use the Air Fryer Instant Vortex Plus XL)
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Small bowl for mixing oil and spices (if you are using these ingredients)
  • Kitchen tongs for easy flipping
  • Plate or serving dish for presentation

Ingredients

  • 6-8 fresh jalapenos
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil (optional)
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Wash and pat the jalapeños dry. For comfort, wear gloves while handling. Slice the peppers lengthwise; remove seeds and membranes for a milder result or leave some in for extra heat.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (190°C). Toss the jalapeños with olive oil (optional), salt, and black pepper. You can also cook them completely oil-free.
  • Arrange the halves in a single layer: skin side up for a crispier texture, cut side up for a softer inside. Leave space for air circulation.
  • Cook for 8–10 minutes at 370°F (190°C). Flip halfway through for even cooking.
  • Check doneness: the edges should be browned, the skin slightly wrinkled, and the flesh tender but holding its shape. Add 1–2 more minutes if needed.
  • Transfer to a plate or serving dish. As an added option, drizzle with some lime juice, sprinkle with smoked paprika, or chop to place in tacos, burgers, salads, and dips.

Notes

Cooking Time and Temperature

Air fry the jalapenos for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway through and adding another 1–2 minutes if needed.

Taste & Texture

Smoky and pleasantly spicy with browned edges, slightly wrinkled skin, and a tender center that still holds its shape.

Storage, Freezing & Reheating

  • Refrigerator: Store cooked jalapenos in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze the jalapeno halves on a tray until solid, then transfer them to a freezer bag.
  • Reheat: Air fry for 3–4 minutes before serving.

Serving Recommendations

  • I like chopping these up for tacos or burgers when I want a little extra heat without adding another sauce.
  • Serve them alongside a dip or add them to a salad when you want to use the roasted jalapenos without much extra preparation.

Recipe Variations and Substitutions

  • Add a squeeze of lime juice before serving.
  • Top with cheddar, mozzarella, or cream cheese.
  • Sprinkle the jalapenos with smoked paprika.
  • Replace the jalapenos with green bell peppers, serrano peppers, Padrón peppers, or shishito peppers.
  • Use avocado or canola oil instead of olive oil.

Proper Storage Tips

  • Store cooked jalapenos in an airtight container.
  • Keep them refrigerated.
  • Use them within 3 days.

Pro Tips

  • Add smoked paprika, garlic powder, or lime juice when you want more flavor.
  • Look for slightly wrinkled skin, browned edges, and tender flesh that still holds its shape.
  • For extra flavor, marinate the jalapenos for 15–20 minutes in olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice before air frying.
  • Start at 370°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes and adjust the cooking time as needed for your air fryer.
Air fryer models may vary. If the peppers darken too quickly, lower to 356°F (180°C); if still they still haven't changed colour after 8 minutes, increase to 392°F (200°C) or extend cooking in 1–2 minute increments.
