Try This Breaded Tilapia in Air Fryer

Tilapia is one of those fish that easily takes on the flavors you add to it, so it works really well to use for air fryer fish. What I enjoy most about this recipe is how the breadcrumb coating becomes crispy and golden, and the fish is juicy inside. It's easy enough to make for a weeknight meal, fish skeptics love it, and you can also serve it when family visits.

Why You'll Love It

air fried tilapia with garnish
  • Quick dinner: This recipe is made much faster than traditional breaded fish recipes, using only 8 ingredients.
  • Crispy without frying: The air fryer makes them come out with a golden, crunchy coating using very little oil.
  • Healthy option: You get delicious fried fish without all the extra grease.
  • Beginner-friendly: Even if you've never cooked fish before, this recipe is very easy to follow with super simple instructions.
  • Versatile meal: You can serve it with veggies, parmesan cheese, cilantro lime rice, salad, or even turn it into fish tacos. This can also be made in the oven, but I prefer using the air fryer because they come out better in my opinion and use less oil.

Ingredients

  • Tilapia fillets: A mild white fish that turns out tender and flaky when it is cooked. Fresh or thawed frozen fillets both work well. You can use any type of fish, including cod, catfish, and salmon, just make sure you check the thickness, as cooking times may vary.
  • Breadcrumbs: These create the crispy coating that makes the tilapia so delicious.
  • Paprika: This is what adds some color and a mild smoky flavor to the crust.
  • Garlic powder: I love adding this because it gives the coating extra flavor.
  • Salt and sugar: This helps remove the excess moisture from the fish and gives an even better texture.

How to Make Breaded Tilapia in Air Fryer

1. Place the tilapia fillets on a marinating plate. Sprinkle a mixture of salt and sugar over them. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes.

NOTE: The salt and sugar will get rid of excess moisture from the fish fillets, bring out their flavor, and make the surface denser. This will result in a firmer crust during cooking and make it easier to serve the fillets, and they won’t break apart.

2. In another plate, small bowl, or container, mix together the bread crumbs, paprika, garlic powder, and pepper. No need to add salt since it was already in the marinade.

3. Once the excess moisture has been drawn out from the fish fillets, gently rinse them under cold water. Pat each tilapia filet dry using paper towels. Preheat the air fryer to 400ºF (200ºC).

4. Evenly sprinkle the seasoned breadcrumbs mixture on both sides of the fillets and carefully place them in the air fryer basket in a single layer using a spatula. Lightly spray the surface of the fillets with some olive oil for a crispier texture and added aroma.

Tip: You can use egg wash for a thicker coating before adding the breadcrumbs, but be sure to add a few minutes of cooking time, as this makes the layer thicker.

5. Cook the fish for 8-10 minutes without flipping.

Note: Tilapia fillets are very delicate; the cooking time may vary depending on their thickness. For small tilapia fillets, 8 minutes should suffice.

7. Once the tilapia is cooked, carefully remove it from the air fryer, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve.

Cooking Tips

  • Always choose fresh or high-quality frozen tilapia fillets. If you are using frozen fillets, remember to thaw them completely in the refrigerator before cooking them.
  • Always pat the fish dry before breading for the crispiest coating.
  • Don't skimp on the seasoning! If you use more herbs and spices, the flavor will become more prominent. You can even add additional herbs and spices, like Italian seasoning, add a teaspoon garlic powder, or chili powder for a bite.
  • Avoid overcrowding the basket, so the hot air can circulate properly.
  • Thicker fillets may need an extra minute or two of cooking time.
  • The fish is done when it flakes easily with a fork. You can also use a digital thermometer; a perfectly cooked tilapia fillet should reach an internal temperature of 145°F.
  • Let the fillets rest for a minute or two before serving.

What Can You Serve With This?

  • Steamed broccoli
  • Roasted asparagus
  • Rice or quinoa
  • Coleslaw
  • Garden salad
  • French fries
  • Fish tacos with cabbage and avocado

FAQs

Why do you use salt and sugar before cooking?

The salt and sugar help draw and remove excess moisture, which makes the fish firmer and helps the coating crisp up better during cooking.

Can I use frozen tilapia?

Yes, but thaw it completely first and pat it dry before breading.

Can I use other white fish?

Absolutely. Cod, sole, haddock, or pollock all work well in this recipe, because they are firm types of fish.

Our breaded tilapia in air fryer recipe is a simple yet delicious solution to weeknight dinners and impromptu gatherings. Combining fresh tilapia fillets with a blend of herbs and spices, this recipe results in a dish that is crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and brimming with flavor.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Spatula
  • Paper towels
  • Marinating plate
  • Container for the breading mixture

Ingredients

  • 2 tilapia fillets about 200 grams or 7 ounces
  • ½ teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoon breadcrumbs
  • freshly cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Place the tilapia fillets on a marinating plate. Sprinkle a mixture of salt and sugar over them. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes.
  • The salt and sugar will extract any excess moisture from the fish fillets, enhance their flavor, and make the surface denser. This will result in a firmer crust during cooking and make it easier to serve the fillets without breaking apart.
  • In another plate or container, mix together the bread crumbs, paprika, garlic powder, and pepper. No need to add salt since it was already in the marinade.
  • Once the excess moisture has been drawn out from the fish fillets, gently rinse them under cold water. Pat them dry using paper towels.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400ºF (200ºC).
  • Evenly sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on both sides of the fillets and carefully place them in the air fryer basket using a spatula. If you have culinary spray, lightly spray the surface of the fillets for a crispier texture and added aroma.
  • Cook the fish for 8-10 minutes without flipping.
Note: Tilapia fillets are very delicate; the cooking time may vary depending on their thickness. For small tilapia fillets, 8 minutes should suffice.
  • Once the tilapia is cooked, carefully remove it from the air fryer and serve.

Notes

Cooking Time and Temperature

Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes until the fish is golden and flakes easily.

Taste & Texture

This breaded tilapia in air fryer recipe delivers a crispy, golden coating with a moist, flaky center. The seasoning adds plenty of flavor while still allowing the delicate taste of the fish to shine through.

Storage, Freezing & Reheating

  • Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Freezer: Wrap cooked fillets individually and freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat: Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 2-3 minutes until warmed through and crispy again.

Serving Recommendations

I love serving this fish with roasted vegetables and rice for a simple weeknight meal. It's also fantastic tucked into warm tortillas with shredded cabbage, avocado, and a squeeze of lime for easy fish tacos.

Recipe Variations and Substitutions

  • Tilapia: Cod, haddock, sole, or pollock work well as substitutes.
  • Breadcrumbs: Try panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
  • Seasoning: Add cayenne pepper, Cajun seasoning, or Italian herbs for a different flavor profile.
  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs if needed.

Proper Storage Tips

  • Cool completely before storing.
  • Keep refrigerated in an airtight container.
  • Reheat in the air fryer instead of the microwave to maintain crispiness.
  • Freeze individual portions for easy meals later.

Pro Tips

  • Don't skip the salt and sugar step—it helps improve the texture of the fish.
  • Pat the fillets very dry before adding the breadcrumbs.
  • Preheat the air fryer for the best results.
  • Avoid overcrowding the basket.
  • Use a spatula when handling the fish to prevent it from breaking apart.
  • Serve with lemon wedges for extra freshness.
