Try This Easy Chunky Guacamole

The secret to the best guacamole recipe is using ripe avocados and not overmixing everything. I like keeping some larger avocado pieces in the dip because it gives that fresh, homemade texture everyone loves.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Fresh and simple: This easy guacamole just needs a handful of fresh ingredients and has so much flavor.
  • Perfect Guacamole Texture: You get creamy with chunky avocado pieces in every bite.
  • Quick to make: All you need is about 15 minutes, and this guacamole is ready. Whether it is for avocado toast or dipping sauce, it is really quick!
  • Perfect for sharing: This dip is great for taco nights, parties, or snacking.
  • Ingredients can vary: I like to switch things a bit for different flavors, so you can add things like jalapeno, fresh cilantro, red onion instead of white, etc. The trick is to go according to your taste preferences. I have even added some sweet chili sauce to my guacamole.

Ingredients

  • Hass avocados: I always use ripe Hass avocados because they’re creamy, buttery, and perfect to use for guacamole.
  • Cherry tomatoes: This gives the guac freshness and a little sweetness to balance the richness.
  • Onions: Can be used to give the guacamole a crunch and a bit of sharpness.
  • Garlic: You just want to add enough to add flavor without taking the taste away from the avocado.
  • Lime juice: Gives the whole dip a different taste and helps keep the avocado from going brown too quickly.

How to Make Homemade Chunky Guacamole

1. Using a long, sharp knife, cut the avocado lengthwise around the seed. Then carefully hit the knife into the seed, holding the avocado in one hand and the knife in the other, and while holding the knife steady, rotate the avocado until the seed separates from the flesh. Be careful not to cut yourself!

2. Use the edge of a cutting board or kitchen counter to safely remove the (pit) seed from the blade. Discard the seed.

3. Using a spoon, scoop the flesh of two avocados into a shallow bowl.

4. Mash with a fork to your liking (smooth or chunky). You can also just peel the avos, but using the spoon works better for me.

Avo flesh spooned out of the peel and added to a bowl, then mashed with a fork

5. Cut the third avocado into small chunks and add the chunks to the mashed avocados. Just make sure that the avocados are perfectly soft and ripe. Otherwise, you'll have hard chunks in your Mexican dip.

5. Add the seasoning to the mashed avocados and add fresh lime juice to taste. Add the onions, cherry tomatoes, garlic, sea salt, and lime juice and stir to combine. Serve immediately.

Optional: To make it spicy, add ¼ teaspoon chili powder. Choose the chili powder that you like the most. Mild, hot, chipotle, or habanero are all great choices.

For a finer guacamole, try combining ½ teaspoon onion powder, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon sea salt for the seasoning, instead of the onions and tomatoes. Mash all 3 avos instead of just 2.

Recipe Tips

  • I like mashing only part of the avocado so the guacamole keeps that chunky, homemade consistency.
  • If your avocados aren’t ripe enough, the texture won’t turn out nearly as creamy.
  • For extra flavor, you can add jalapeños or other spicy peppers.
  • For a different texture and look, try dicing the avos instead of mashing them.
  • Use leftover guacamole in wraps the next day, but be sure to keep the guac in the refrigerator with a lid that seals well or use plastic wrap.

Note: Feel free to customize this recipe further, such as omitting the tomatoes and adding fresh jalapeños to taste.

FAQs

How to keep guacamole from turning brown

The lime juice will help delay the discoloration, but won't prevent it turning brown. Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface before refrigerating. That helps slow down browning by keeping air away from the avocado.

How to store guacamole

To keep it fresh, store it in the fridge until serving. Depending on how ripe your avocados are, it will last for 1-3 days.

Can I freeze it?

Yes, it freezes well for up to 3 months. Spoon it into a zip-lock bag and squeeze out all the air. To defrost, place it in the fridge overnight or thaw it in a bowl of cold water for 1 hour.

Should I leave the avocado pit in the guacamole?

Some people leave the pit in the bowl, but in my experience, the lime juice and plastic wrap help much more.

Can I use salsa in guacamole?

Yes, a spoonful of chunky salsa can add extra flavor and make it even easier to throw together quickly.
