On a hot summer day, there’s honestly nothing better than a thick, creamy vanilla shake made with good-quality ice cream and real vanilla. This homemade vanilla milkshake requires only 3 ingredients. Vanilla bean, ice cream, and milk are all you need.

Try This Classic Vanilla Milkshake

I love this recipe because it uses 3 simple ingredients, but the result tastes even better than some I have seen on Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest!

It is easy to make as well, especially when you are in a rush to make something cold and yummy at the same time.

The Perfect Milkshake - Why You’ll Love It

  • Only three ingredients: I love recipes like this where you can make something so delicious with ingredients you probably already have in the freezer.
  • Perfect Texture: Thick, creamy, and smooth. If you ask me, this is exactly what a proper vanilla milkshake recipe should taste like.
  • Easy to customize: You can add strawberries, chocolate syrup, or even a little malt if you want to change things up.
  • Customizable: If you don't have real bourbon vanilla beans available, you can use 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract instead. It is also possible to use vanilla bean ice cream and skip adding extra vanilla if desired. You can also use whipping cream instead of milk if you prefer a richer shake.
  • Occasion: It goes very well with burgers or sliders and is super refreshing on hot summer days. Enjoy it all year round and not just on National Vanilla Milkshake Day.

can find. Vanilla bean ice cream gives the richest flavor.

• Whole milk: Helps blend everything smoothly. I like whole milk because it keeps the vanilla shake extra creamy.

• Vanilla bean: Fresh vanilla seeds add incredible flavor. If I don’t have one, I use pure vanilla extract instead of imitation vanilla.

How to A Make Homemade Vanilla Milkshake

1. First, cut off both ends of the vanilla bean and slice it lengthwise with a sharp knife. Open it up and scrape out the seeds using the back of the knife.

2. In a blender or food processor, combine the vanilla ice cream, milk, and vanilla bean seeds.

3. Blend for 20–30 seconds until smooth, creamy, and fully combined.

4. Pour into a tall glass and top with whipped cream, a cherry, or any toppings you like.

Recipe Tips

  • I always start with slightly softened ice cream so the blender doesn’t have to work too hard.
  • For a richer texture, I sometimes replace part of the milk with a little heavy cream. However, if you prefer thinner shakes, blend it a little longer or just let it sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. If desired, you can also thin it by adding an additional 1-2 tablespoon (15-30 ml) milk.
  • Use only the best quality vanilla ice cream that you would eat as a treat. Vanilla bean ice cream is my favorite brand.
  • The seeds of a real bourbon vanilla bean give the best taste. Vanilla extract just isn’t the same.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make this without a blender?

Yes. Let the ice cream sit at room temperature for a few minutes, then stir everything together until smooth.

What’s the best milk to use?

I prefer whole milk because it gives the creamiest result, but any milk will work.

Can I make it thicker?

Absolutely. Use more cups of ice cream or slightly less milk.

Vanilla bean, ice cream, and milk is all you need. This single-serve homemde vanilla milkshake recipe is super easy to make, and you can be enjoying this cold and creamy treat in minutes. Top it with whipped cream and cocktail cherry, or add sprinkles.

Ingredients

  • ½ pint vanilla ice cream
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 1 vanilla bean (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract)

Instructions

  • First, cut off both ends of the vanilla bean and cut it through the middle lengthwise using the tip of a sharp knife. Although you don't need to cut it all the way through, it's ok when you do so. Then open the vanilla bean and scrape out the flavorful seeds with the back of the knife.
  • In a blender or food processor, combine the vanilla ice cream, milk, and vanilla bean seeds and blend until smooth, creamy, and evenly mixed, about 20-30 seconds.
  • Transfer to a tall glass and top with whipped cream and cocktail cherry or your favorite toppings.

Recipe Variations and Flavors

  • If you want to switch up the flavors, there are plenty of fun options.
  • Blend in strawberries for a fruity version, swirl in chocolate syrup, or add a spoonful of malt for that old-fashioned diner taste.

Pro Tips

  • Use good-quality vanilla ice cream.
  • Skip imitation vanilla if possible.
  • Blend just until smooth.
  • Serve immediately.

Storage, Freezing & Reheating

  • Store briefly in the freezer if needed.
  • Blend again before serving.
  • Milkshakes are best enjoyed right away.
  • If you have leftovers, pop the glass in the freezer for a short time, then re-blend before serving.

Serving Recommendations

I love serving this with whipped cream, a cherry, and sometimes colorful sprinkles. It also pairs perfectly with burgers and fries.
