Air fryers are a convenient way to cook your favorite foods without overheating your kitchen. One question that often comes up is whether you can use parchment paper in an air fryer. The simple answer is yes; it is possible, but some precautions are necessary.

Air fryers have a non stick surface that is perforated to allow air flow. If parchment paper is used in an air fryer, the sheet must be perforated so that air can flow freely around the food.

Parchment paper makes cleanup a breeze and is especially useful when cooking greasy or sticky foods. With just a few tips, you can safely and effectively use parchment paper in your air fryer for your favorite sticky foods.

What Is Parchment Paper?

Parchment paper is used in cooking and baking to prevent food from sticking to the pan. It is coated with a food-grade coating that allows it to pull away from baked goods. Parchment paper is also used as cookie sheets to prevent cookies from sticking.

You can buy parchment paper in individual sheets or on a roll and is available at virtually all grocers and retail stores. It is a valuable resource that should be in all kitchens. The paper is heat-resistant and non-stick and is particularly useful in an air fryer basket.

Is Parchment Paper Safe To Use in the Air Fryer?

It is safe to use parchment paper in your air fryer, but only up to 425 ºF or 220 ºC. So the first thing you want to check is the temperature your food requires. Most air fryers only heat up to 400 degrees F, but it is always best to double-check with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Other things to consider are the size of the paper and whether it is perforated. If the sheet isn't perforated, simply perforate it yourself using a skewer or similar tool.

It is always best to consult the air fryer manual for your particular unit before lining it with parchment to check on the maximum cooking temperature.

What Is an Air Fryer Parchment Paper?

Air fryer parchment paper is pre-cut sheets of parchment paper that are specifically designed for air fryers. They are cut to fit snugly inside the basket and come with perforated holes.

Air circulation is important in air fryers because they are designed to cook food by enveloping it in hot air, also known as convection heating. The hot air surrounding the food allows it to have a crispy exterior while staying moist inside.

Make Sure You Have the Right Paper

Parchment paper and wax paper are two common necessities in the kitchen, but each serves a distinct purpose. Wax paper is primarily used to wrap leftovers and to help in rolling out dough. Parchment paper is oven safe and is commonly used to line pans to prevent food from sticking.

When heat is not involved, the two can be used interchangeably. However, wax paper cannot be used in an oven because it isn't heat resistant, and the wax will melt.

Another consideration is the type of air fryer you're using. For instance, Cosori air fryers are square and airwaves are round. So, if you are buying pre-cut sheets, make sure it is the right shape and size for your air fryer.

Measure the Paper and Cut to Fit

Just as important as making sure you have the right paper is to make sure you have the correct size and fit. You can either buy pre-fitted air fryer parchment paper or make your own. To do this, tear a bigger piece of parchment than you need from the roll and place it in the basket while it is cool.

Smooth out the edges with your hands and trim the excess. Once you have the correct size, remove the paper for the preheating process and perforate the sheet with a skewer or small pair of scissors for proper air flow.

Lay the parchment paper flat on the bottom and make sure the paper doesn't go up the sides. This prevents air flow to the food and can also be a fire hazard if it gets near the heating element.

Another safety tip is to not stuff the parchment paper into the sides of the fryer between the basket and the outer wall. Doing this will also prevent proper air flow.

Don't Heat Past the Maximum Temperature

This is the biggest safety issue, as burnt parchment paper turns dark and brittle and releases noxious chemicals that will seep into your food. Another major concern is that the burnt parchment paper will float into the upper heating element and cause a fire.

Don't Use Parchment Paper During Pre-Heating

Parchment paper is extremely light, and it is not weighted down, the air flow will blow it into the heating element and potentially cause a fire. To prevent this, preheat the air fryer without the parchment paper. Once preheated, add the parchment paper and weigh it down with whatever you're cooking.

The best time to add the parchment paper to the air fryer basket is at the same time as when you add your ingredients. After the food has cooked, clean up is a breeze. Simply lift the parchment paper out of the air fryer basket and toss it. Wash the basket and you're done.

Don’t Use Parchment Paper for Foods With High Fat Content

Foods with high-fat content, such as bacon, can cause the parchment paper to become greasy and potentially catch fire. It's best to avoid using parchment paper for these types of foods.

If you do decide to use parchment paper for these types of foods, be sure to carefully monitor the cooking process.

Where To Buy Air Fryer Parchment Paper?

Air fryer parchment paper is relatively easy to find online and in retail stores. Walmart, Target, and Amazon are some of the more common retail outlets that carry it. Amazon has the biggest selection of pre-cut parchment sheets.

When To Use Parchment Paper With Your Air Fryer

Using parchment paper in your air fryer can be a safe, effective way to prevent food from sticking. It can make cleanup easier, provided that proper precautions are taken.

To ensure safety, it is important to use air fryer-specific or perforated parchment paper to allow proper air circulation. At the same time, you'll also want to avoid overfilling or overhanging the edges.

By following my tips and guidelines, air fryer enthusiasts can enjoy the convenience and benefits of using parchment paper without sacrificing the health advantages and efficiency of this versatile cooking method.
